More on the HMCS Halifax

Here are some more articles about the HMCS Halifax's visit to Kingston:

Also, here are some pictures of the Halifax in Kingston that I found on-line

More pictures and articles are coming, I hope, since the Halifax is now officially in Toronto (though Jake says the fog is so thick he can hardly see the shore!)

To tide you over, here are a couple of pics from the Fisheries Patrol the Halifax did back in February (from the Dept. of Defense website):

HMCS Halifax comes calling

HMCS Halifax comes calling

Frigate's Montreal stop is first of what will be many along St. Lawrence, Great Lakes for workhorse of Canadian navy

RENE BRUEMMER, The Gazette

Published: Saturday, April 21, 2007

A Canadian naval frigate that enforced United Nations sanctions off the coast of Yugoslavia and hunted for Al-Qa'ida operatives in the Persian Gulf after 9/11 is in Montreal on a public relations offensive this weekend.

Just under 11/2 football fields long, with an engine large enough to power a city of 5,000, and armed with Sea Sparrow missiles, torpedoes and .50-calibre heavy machine guns, HMCS Halifax will be open to the public this weekend in the Old Port.

Its 209 crew members, 19 of them women, will be on hand to greet visitors - if they're not on shore leave enjoying Montreal.

"The whole purpose of our trip is to go and meet Canadians and raise the profile of the forces and the navy and let them meet sailors and come on board," said Commander Scott Bishop, who is nearing the end of his two-year rotation as captain of the Halifax.

With most Canadian naval bases located abroad, it's difficult for most Canadians to see what the navy does, Bishop said.

"This ship can do up to 30 knots (about 55 kilometres an hour), but the fuel mileage is lousy," he deadpanned.

The first of 12 such helicopter-carrying frigates built in Canada in the 1990s, the Halifax is known as the workhorse of the Canadian navy, a multi-role patrol frigate equipped with anti-submarine technology as well as defence against surface and air threats.

In addition to combat, training and diplomacy, the ship is used to patrol Canadian waters and enforce fishing zones.

The Montreal stop is the first of several for HMCS Halifax along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes over the next month. The visit here has been highly anticipated by crew members eager to take in the city, and some eager to come home.

Ordinary Seaman Alexandre Lebrun, 27, of Laval's Ste. Dorothee district enlisted about two years ago to see a bit more of the world. Despite the fact he discovered on his first naval voyage that he gets seasick easily - "The first few days of every trip are bad" - he is loving the life of cramped quarters and high seas.

"Before this, I hadn't left Quebec," he said. "Now, I've seen a lot of Canada, and I'll see the world."

Rough waters shouldn't be a problem this weekend. If they are, the Halifax is known to withstand seas in excess of 10 metres high, and is designed to right itself if it capsizes - or at least remain afloat if it doesn't.

HMCS Halifax is docked at Alexandra Pier in the heart of the Old Port. Visiting hours are 1 to 4 p.m. today, tomorrow and Monday.

One year (and a little bit) + more pictures of Jeanne

Hi everybody,

Many apologies for not having posted in a while (yet again).

It just occurred to me that the Cotter blog just missed its 1-year anniversary, which was April 3, but hopefully we'll be around for many more (and maybe actually celebrate on the right day from now on). We're getting ready to move to a new place, June 1, and though we'll be staying in the general vicinity we'll soon have a lot more room.

As some of you may know, too, Jeanne's Grandma Marie is moving to Halifax to be with us and we'll be sharing this new house. We are all just so excited, especially Jeanne who just loves spending time with Grandma. With Jake at sea, and me busy with packing and driving lessons, the house is super crazy, but Marie keeps it going smoothly (and you can actually see the kitchen countertop!)

Anyhow, I hope you're all doing well (Jeanne's fan club, and other friends of the Cotter blog), and that spring is coming your way as it is ours (though you wouldn't know it lately).

Be well,
Ellen et al.

Jeanne in her Easter bonnet

Speaking of Easter, uh, wasn't it supposed to be Spring already?

Yes, this is from the Easter weekend, not Christmas.

Pretty dress. Oh, and in case you didn't hear, Jeanne got her first two teeth over the Easter weekend.

Jeanne is so obsessed with playing with the TV remote (I guess it's because she sees us 'playing' with it all the time), that we took the batteries out of an old one we weren't using and gave it to her. I think she's a little disappointed that it doesn't actually do anything.

Jeanne isn't actually crawling yet, but somehow managed to get under this chair the other day, all by herself.

Yey, the camera is finally working!

Well, actually it's been working for a couple of days, but I'm finally putting some of the pictures I've taken up here on the blog.

I was talking on the phone the other day while Jeanne was bouncing, and I turned around and she'd fallen asleep. So cute!

Tearing up the floor (again!)

The final bunny prototype, as I've been promising for quite a while.

The bunny and the kitty I made before, to show scale (bunny is a little smaller than kitty, as you can see).

Updates to follow

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of recent activity here in Cotterville, but we've all been sick and super busy. I've been doing tonnes of work on my little bunnies (which, as some of you may know, I'm trying to turn into a part-time money-maker). I'll post some pics of them as soon as I can get our camera working (argh!). I can't even post any recent pics of the Munchkin yet, since they're on the laptop and it's not working. Sorry!

Lots o' pics!

Sarah is up visiting us from the great T.O., and her camera is better than mine, so we've been taking lots of pictures of the Munchy. Enjoy!

A new yarn

My yarn arrived! I ordered it on-line from Larkspur Funny Farm in Colorado last week (check out her Etsy store too). I don't know if the colour will show up that well in this pic, since all monitors display colours quite differently, but it is just beautiful: %100 handpainted organic alpaca wool in shades of pink and green. The little felt ornament was a bonus she threw in, and it's really cute.

P.S. for those of you who haven't yet discovered Etsy, check it out! It's a well-designed website that helps artists sell their wares online, and everything that is sold is handmade. I have bought some incredible items there (like this yarn), and I'm planning on setting up my own store once I have some inventory.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do with this yarn, but I think it will become an amigurumi rabbit, though smaller than the one I made for Jeanne since the yarn itself is more delicate than the chunky stuff I used for the original 'sleepy bunny.' I've even ordered some organic cotton stuffing so that the entire toy will be organic, and hopefully this will be the start of something marketable.

But all that will have to wait until I finish the bunny I am currently working on (in worsted-weignt acrylic in shades of blue and green) for the MFRC's parent'n tot programme. I made a ball which I brought in on Monday (actually it was the severed head of a bunny I didn't feel like finishing because it would have been huge!, but it looked like a ball), and the kids seemed to enjoy it (you can really whollop someone with it without hurting them, which is a bonus). I want to see if the kids and parents like my bunnies (free product testing), plus it's nice to give something back to the programme Jeanne and I enjoy so much. It's a new pattern too, designed entirely by myself (though done in the amigurumi crocheting technique), and I'm testing it out for the first time now (the hardest parts are the ears), so wish me luck!

And now, the obligatory pictures of Jeanne:

New things

Hey all,

Jeanne and I had a really long day, with parent'n tot in the morning and Kindermusik in the afternoon. When we got home, I tried Jeanne in her exersaucer for the first time and she just loves it, so I though I'd share the pic. Enjoy!

Boobies!

Check out this neat article: Knitted breasts help new mothers
I'll have to find a pattern and start making them, even it it's just for fun (maybe with nipple rings?)

Busy busy

Here are a few new pics of the Munchkin.

Jeanne wearing her new dress.
Mum and I did a little sewing while she was visiting, and this is the little dress I made Jeanne for the parent'n tot Valentine's Day party. I'll post a pic of her wearing the one Mum made for her soon.

We started Kindermusik this week, and Jeanne and I just loved it. She grinned the entire time!

While still quite thin, Wendy is doing much better on her new Thyroid medication. What I'd do to be able to nap as well as she does...

At the beach.
While Mum and Gram were visiting, we rented a car and went on a drive along the shore south of Halifax. The day was bitterly cold, but I wanted to walk along the beach anyways. A local even stopped to see if we needed a hand (wondering, I suppose, who in their right mind would be outside on such a bleak day unless they absolutely had to).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Jake would be proud of me: I brought home a picture of stones rather than filling my pockets as I usually do. P.S. It makes a great desktop, if I do say so myself.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
We stopped for lunch (an amazing lunch!) in a tiny little town, and I just couldn't help taking a picture of this great retro toy. You don't see many of these around any more.

Updates may be spotty for the next little bit, since we've just switched everything over from our non-functioning desktop to our semi-functioning laptop, and it's being a royal pain in the donkey.

Oops!

Oops, meant to post this a couple of days ago. Looks like Jeanne's got a future as a punk rocker! Thanks for making this, Sarah; it's awesome! (gotta love photoshop, eh?)

Sick day

Hi all,

The only one of us not sick right now is Jeanne, and I figure its only a matter of time. Ugh! Anyhow, here are some new pics:

Hi everybody!

Jeanne has all of a sudden decided that she will no longer drink rice from her bottle, so we've had to start spoon-feeding her (without a lot of success, I'm afraid). While she thinks the process is hilarious, she doesn't actually want to swallow any of it. Yes, I know I should have had a bib on her, but I was doing laundry anyways, plus we were about to stick her in the bath.
Nothing like a nice hot bath before bedtime!

The squid hat, and other photos

Sorry that it's taken me so long to post these, Sarah, but here are the pictures you asked for of the squid that ate Jeanne head. P.S. Thanks for the pirate pic.; it's awesome!

For those not in the know, my sister Sarah, who just learned how to knit, made this squid hat as a Christmas present for Jeanne. Then it ate Jeanne's head (who knows, maybe thats why she's drooling.) The pic of Sarah as a pirate (on her blog, The Squid Cave), features the Jack Sparrow wig I made her for Christmas.

The squid queen blesses her many fans with squiggliness!

Here's a couple of pics of Jeanne playing on her new piano (a baby grand, also courtesy of her Aunt Sarah), which she absolutely loves. She really enjoys listening to the little songs it plays, and she's even starting to press down on the keys herself.

All dressed up for Christmas dinner, in her new Bumbo seat (these things are amazing!) I swear, it looks like she's been drinking.

All dressed up with Mummy (yes, I know she looks like a boy, but we got it as a hand-me-down and I just couldn't resist the little Scottie dog on the front - so cute!)

Jeanne's first taste of solid food. Just this past week we've started giving Jeanne some rice, and she has really taken to it. She doesn't like the spoon yet, so I've been giving her some mixed with breast milk in a bottle every night. From the very first night we started doing this she's just gulped it down with no hesitation.

Finishing her nightly bottle - most of the time she even holds it herself.
